Hawthorne Headhunters – “If You Were My Baby”
Take a listen to “If You Were My Baby” the first single form Hawthorne Headhunters 14-track album Myriad of Now. A Southern California-based group with St. Louis roots, Hawthorne Headhunters have strong jazz and electronic influences that are heavily represented on this track.
The beat is easy to appreciate – its one of those tracks you fall in love with on the first listen – but the lyrics are the icing on the proverbial cake. It’s always refreshing to hear rappers describe healthy and mutually fulfilling love, and ‘Train and ‘Spade of Hawthorne Headhunters do so effortlessly. The spoken word near the end of the track is full of perfect and sappy lines like “Even the sun has no warmth without you” and “Forever’s not long enough.” It’s just…sweet.
In short, love it. Love everything about it. Even the artwork for the single.
