The résumé that Bikram Singh could draft is not the kind that employers come across every day.
Education: Touro Law School. Experience: Defending tenants on the brink of eviction and providing legal services at a Hindu senior center. Career objective: Providing affordable legal services to communities in need while building private practice and maintaining status as international heartthrob and Punjabi hip-hop star.
Watching Mr. Singh negotiate with blustering landlords’ lawyers the other day in the humdrum hallway outside housing court in Manhattan, I wondered if it took some restraint for Mr. Singh, 29, to refrain from demanding, “Do you know who I am?”
But of course they do not. Unless they are young fans of Punjabi folk music, chances are they haven’t seen the young women lining up backstage to meet Mr. Singh after concerts, or downloaded “Kawan,” a romantic duet he recorded with a popular Bollywood singer.
Of the stars in North America who perform Bhangra fusion — an urban take on traditional Punjabi music — Mr. Singh is “absolutely the most famous,” said Rekha Malhotra, the producer of a popular Bhangra series at the Manhattan nightclub SOB’s.
