Israel to Ease Gaza Blockade

Israel has agreed to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip and allow more humanitarian aid into the Hamas-ruled territory.

Government spokesman Mark Regev said the plan approved Thursday will allow more goods to reach Gaza and expand the flow of supplies for use in civilian projects under international supervision. He said materials that could be used to make weapons will still be banned.

A spokesman in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip dismissed the Israeli announcement as propaganda.

Palestinian officials say the changes would allow more than 100 items to be brought into Gaza but are still demanding a complete lifting of the blockade.

U.S. Middle East Envoy George Mitchell has returned to the region to resume indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
