Obama to students: ‘Education has never been more important’
President Obama plans to give students a pep talk early this afternoon, telling them that a good education is the key to good jobs in the 21st Century.
“More and more, the kinds of opportunities that are open to you will be determined by how far you go in school,” Obama plans to say, according to an advance text provided by the White House. “In other words, the farther you go in school, the farther you’ll go in life.”
Obama also plans to address the anxieties of the age in his remarks at Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia. The speech will be broadcast to schools across the country.
“You read about the war in Afghanistan, you hear about the recession we’ve been through, you see it in your parents’ faces and sense it in their voice,” says the advance text.
But “nobody gets to write your destiny but you,” Obama plans to add, and the chances of success are dramatically improved “so long as you’re willing to stay focused on your education.”
