The ReadNex Poetry Squad
I love mix tapes. I consider myself quite fortunate to have the opportunity to get my hot little hands on some pretty rare material. I came across The ReadNex Poetry Squad mix tape amongst a collection of demos distributed at the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival. There are two tracks on the album, one being DJ H20 Spring Mixx. The other is a single track titled “Be Different”.
Expanding well beyond the traditional mix tape, samples span more genres of music than most people hear at once, but with transitions that make for seamless listening. H20 integrates several new and old school classics by the likes of Notrious B.I.G., Kriss Kross, Kanye West, and T-Pain laid over samples ranging from Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, and Nina Simone–including drops from various electronic artists.
This is definitely a variation from the hip hop norm, but, from an international perspective, not entirely shocking. On the B Side, “Be Different” is exactly that, a unique track composed of vocals laid over hip hop and electronic beats with a relatively wholesome message to be different. Some of the vocals remind me a bit of thekeenone and in retrospect I suppose the same applies to the beat.
