News of the World: Murdoch’s Empire Under Scrutiny
Written by Deft Magazine Staff Writer, Nicolette Tucker.
As the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 approaches grieving family members demand the U.S. examine the accusations that the journalists at the British News of the World tabloid attempted to hack the phones of the last few minutes of their love ones.
These claims first appeared in the Daily Mirror, a British newspaper. The paper stated journalists at “News of the World,” which is under Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, approached a New York private investigator to buy phone records of the victims.
As ill feelings intensify over these allegations, legislators on Capitol Hill are pushing for a full investigation. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J. called the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission to examine the conduct of Murdoch’s media empire.
Although there is scarce amount of information regarding the matter, many lawmakers are worried about the conducts of the News Corporation and it’s subsidiaries.
Former deputy chief of the FDNY, Jim Riches, whose 29-year-old fireman son was killed during 9/11, is outraged. He told Politico, “Someone should look into it to see if their rights were violated – the family members I’ve talked to are appalled, they’re disgruntled, they have to relive the pain all over again.”

20th Anniversary of “Boyz N The Hood”
Written by Deft Magazine Staff Writer Kadeem Lundy
Twenty years ago on July 12, 1991 a then-unknown 22-year-old director named John Singleton unleashed a film on the world which opened eyes to what was going on in the lives of young black men trying to survive amongst living around violence. The film starred Cuba Gooding Jr as the lead character in his first feature film, with Nia Long, Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, Angela Bassett and Ice Cube in supporting roles.
Twenty years later the film has had not only a impact on the portrayal of young black men growing up amongst urban violence, but on hip-hop as well. Speaking on the film’s impact on hip hop during a recent interview with XXL Magazine Singleton stated, “The picture, when we made it, there was nothing like it at the time. I especially wanted to do it in Los Angeles… It was kind of a small, mini epic because the movie starts in 1984 and then goes all the way up to 1991. Like I said, that movie was really a personal movie. A lot of heart, soul, and love went into it.”
Inspired to write the script for the film from his own experiences growing up in South Central, Los Angeles, but came up with the title from a popular song that the group N.W.A. released in the late eighties. Singleton expressed that originally he had strived to have the entire group featured in the film, however ultimately Ice Cube, whom Singleton had specifically written the part of Doughboy for, was the only member of the group to star in the film.
The success of “Boyz” opened doors for other films to be made about urban black culture in the 90’s, some of which include the classic films “Juice,” the Hughes Brothers’ “Menace to Society” and “Set It Off.”
For Singleton the success of his debut film lead to him becoming the youngest and first African-American to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, at the age of 24. That same year Singleton was also nominated for a Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2002, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry.
