So many tinkerings, so little time. Thanks for your faith, Gusar. It is not supported in any way.

Hmmm. Xorg No Devices To Configure But Ctrl+Alt+F7 took me ~back to the twilight zone. I tried to install everything that Lubuntu had attempted LoadModule. Note that after rebooting with four-line 10-monitor.conf, this works perfectly; I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 then Ctrl+Alt+F7, and the display is as it was before, as it should be.I hope that this gives
At this point the VGA Wonder line was cancelled and replaced with a cost reduced DRAM based version of Mach32 known as the "ATi Graphics Wonder". http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=28156 Notes: DVI on these cards is flaky and is essentially unusable with DOS. Thus I'm inclined to consider this an issue within either pacman or the kernel (the loading of modules). Lately I've fallen out of love with Canonical, however; want to have more control of the installation, be more involved with the troubleshooting, and stick with distributions that offer two things See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions. http://deftmag.com/failed-to/regsvr32-module-failed-to-load.html I got it working, eventually.

mach64 is definitely the right driver to use. When you run it, it looks just like the software in list #1 above, and that's only version 1.45. The Radeon 8500 is a 4 pipeline design with 2 texture units per pipeline and operates at up to 275 MHz, typically with synchronous core and RAM. You can adjust resolution and refresh rates. 6) This is a slightly newer version to the one that appears on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. I can now select any resolution, and assign any refresh rate to these resolutions. I believe you're onto something. It became an extension (and eventual successor) to the ATI Wonder series of cards. To know or not to know ...... This made ownership expensive[why?]. So install xf86-video-mach64 and remove all other x86-video-* packages.
I've tried it without the "ati", with only the "mach64", with all four. Perhaps this is a valuable clue.... But your subtle reminder that root is a security risk _is_ an excellent point. Also, while not initially available, adaptive anti-aliasing was added to the R400 series after the release of R500 series.

These cards were unique at the time as they offered the end user a considerable amount of value by combining support for multiple graphics standards (and monitors) into a single card. NVIDIA would not be able to match or exceed ATI's Direct3D 9.0 performance until the release of the GeForce 6 series in 2004.
