23 Killed, 300 Wounded in Kyrgyz Riots

Kyrgyz interim Prime Minister Roza Otunbayeva is calling for calm in Kyrgyzstan’s southern city of Osh, where health officials say riots killed 23 people and wounded more than 300 others.

Fighting erupted between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek groups overnight and continued into early Friday.

Rioters smashed windows, looted businesses and burned cars, prompting the Kyrgyz government to declare a state of emergency in Osh and three neighboring districts. A Kyrgyz government spokesman says authorities sent armored vehicles to the site of the riots and imposed a nighttime curfew.
