Portland Public Schools staff have recommended the school board approve a charter school application that would establish Portland’s first high school that focuses on recording arts such as poetry, hip hop music and an integrated arts curriculum.

Seven district staff evaluated the application, agreeing the High School of Recording Arts Portland (HSRAP) should be approved pending the school’s response to nearly 50 follow-up questions.

According to the staff review, the application met the criteria in describing its mission statement, purpose and support for learning. A majority of the team felt the group met financial, accountability and educational standards. The group had a split opinion about whether the school provided sufficient and clear information about demand for the school.

If approved by the board, HSRAP would be the tenth charter school in the district and the third that directly serves high school-age students.
