Jim Clyburn alleges Senate nominee Alvin Greene was a ‘plant’
U.S. Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn on Thursday said the winner of his party’s South Carolina U.S. Senate primary is “someone’s plant” and called on state and federal authorities to investigate.
His call came two days after Alvin M. Greene of Manning, an unemployed veteran, stunned Charleston attorney and former state legislator Vic Rawl by capturing 59 percent of the vote to win the nomination to face U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in November.
Contacted Thursday, Greene, 32, told The Greenville News he had no comment, and hung up.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles declined to comment on whether there is an investigation or whether there had been an official request.
“It is the policy of this office to neither confirm nor deny investigations by the Federal Election Commission,” Nettles told The News.
Christian Holland, spokesman for the FEC, said his agency also couldn’t comment. He said Greene hasn’t filed any paperwork with his agency but wouldn’t be required to unless he collected more than $5,000 in donations or spent more than that on campaign expenses.
