Journalists are the few people in the world that dedicate their lives to holding people accountable; whose functions impact society on a social and political scale. News Corporation has singlehandedly diminished the role of a journalist with its phone-hacking scandal. On Saturday, Rupert Murdoch, founder of News Corporation, printed a public apology in seven of British national papers.

“The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself. We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred.”

Murdoch, who signed the message, says that he wishes his company had acted faster and that apologizing is “not enough.”

“In the coming days, as we take further concrete steps to resolve these issues and make amends for the damage they have caused, you will hear more from us.”

As the scandal continues to unfold, the 168 –year-old newspaper continues to outrage many with the decisions made by its staff.

As for former chief executive of News International, Rebekah Brooks, who resigned on Friday, was promptly arrested on Sunday in connection with the scandal, after volunteering to assist with the ongoing investigations.

With the unyielding pressure from investigators, British Parliament and the media, Murdoch has to do server damage control— if— News of The World has not already tarnished his media empire’s credibility.

Today Murdoch testifies in front of the British Parliament alongside son, James Murdoch.
