Music preview: G. Love & Special Sauce Bring Hip-Hop Blues to Senator
G. Love & Special Sauce will be reintroducing their foot stomping music to Chico area folks who score a ticket to their Wednesday gig at the Senator Theatre. For its latest CD, the self-proclaimed “hip-hop blues” outfit continues to build its musical popularity on their groovy blues style, rhythmic hip-hop lyrics, and wailing harmonica.
The song ideas for Superhero Brother came from G. Love’s participation in Brazil’s fourth annual Alma Surf Festival. Oddly enough, it wasn’t the paid festival gig but a beach visit to the slums of Rio de Janeiro where he and co-performers, Matt Costa and Donovan Frankenreiter, sang with disadvantaged kids which lit the creative fire behind the songs G. Love would be inspired to write for the album.
The song “Peace, Love and Happiness” is dedicated to the children he met there. “We went in and played for these kids, and just the energy these kids gave back to us and the whole day was just joyous,” G. Love said. “My thinking was, why let this world weigh on your shoulders? If these kids that are living there can be so full of life and love and hope, then anybody can.”
