Obama: New PTSD treatment process
President Barack Obama announced that starting Monday a new claims process for military veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will be in place to make it easier for veterans to receive benefits.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will offer a streamlined process, Obama said in his weekly address, that no longer requires veterans to submit that a specific event that caused their mental trauma. The requirement has kept veterans who served in non-combat roles from getting PTSD care.
“Well, I don’t think our troops on the battlefield should have to take notes to keep for a claims application. And I’ve met enough veterans to know that you don’t have to engage in a firefight to endure the trauma of war,” Obama said. “So we’re changing the way things are done.”
Obama said the changes should have been enacted a long time ago in a nation fighting two wars, including the longest in American history in Afghanistan.
