Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Wednesday the Palestinians could make peace with Israel within weeks.

Erekat’s remarks were in response to Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman who said Tuesday that reaching a peace deal with the Palestinians needs at least a decade.

“Lieberman’s remarks reveal the nature of the two sides’ positions regarding the peace process and the side that thwarts it, ” Erekat told Xinhua. “We, the Palestinians, say that making peace needs only a few weeks.”

Erekat added that Lieberman’s statement “is another proof that the current Israeli government prefers the continuation of occupation, settlement, siege and war crimes.”
