Parma native Captain Magik’s star is rising in gay hip-hop, on Logo network
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony have a homie who is hijacking hip-hop with lyrics like: “I’m sorry Dad if you can’t understand / Don’t be mad I’m in love with a man.”
Those are the opening lines of “Dilemma,” a coming-out call to arms by Captain Magik, a 28-year-old Parma native who likes to say his “government name” is Brian Bayer.
“Dilemma” was voted the Click List Best Video of 2008 on Logo, MTV Networks’ gay and lesbian channel. That makes Captain Magik — “It’s kind of like my gay superhero name,” Bayer explains — the most successful hip-hopper to break out of the rock ‘n’ roll capital of the world last year.
He did it with a little help from his friends.
His debut CD, “Young, Gay & Proud” (Lil Milo Management), was recorded in the Parma basement of his buddy Bobby Jones, who also directed the video for “Dilemma,” a gritty montage of Cleveland landmarks: Terminal Tower, Edgewater Park, Tower City, the “Free Stamp” sculpture.
“The whole thing was super low-budget,” Bayer says. “Maybe $5,000.”
“Dilemma” has been viewed and downloaded by thousands of YouTubers and MySpacers who are pumping their fists to a hard-knuckled new genre known as “homo-hop.”
