Violence has spread through the Thai capital Bangkok, in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly crackdown by security forces to end the weeks-long occupation by anti-government demonstrators in the city's upscale commercial district.

Leaders of the protesters, known as Red Shirts, surrendered to police and told followers they were ending their two-month old demonstrations in order to avoid any further bloodshed.

However, rioting broke out across the city, with several arson attacks at major businesses and institutions, including the Thai stock exchange, a local television station and a major shopping mall. The unrest also spread outside of the capital, with attacks on government buildings in the northeastern cities of Udon Thani and Khon Kaen.
