Turkey ‘warns Israel on ties’

Turkey’s foreign minister has reportedly said that diplomatic ties with Israel will be cut unless the country receives an apology over the deadly raid on the Gaza aid flotilla.

Two newspapers quoted Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday, but an unnamed Turkish government official appeared later to try and play down the comments saying that the minister’s words had been misquoted.

Hurriyet Daily News, the English-language version of Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper, quoted Davutoglu as saying that “Israelis have three options: They will either apologise or acknowledge an international-impartial inquiry and its conclusion. Otherwise, our diplomatic ties will be cut off”.

The foreign minister reportedly made the comments in Turkish on Sunday while on a plane returning from a visit to Kyrgyzstan.
