U.S. Not Worried By South Korea’s Tougher Stance on North, Bosworth Says
The U.S. isn’t worried by the tougher stance taken toward North Korea by South Korean President Lee Myung Bak, said President Barack Obama’s envoy to the peninsula Stephen Bosworth, who arrived for talks in Seoul today.
“We are here to consult and coordinate our positions on the way forward in dealing with North Korea,” Bosworth said. “Serious negotiations must be at the heart of any strategy for dealing with North Korea and we look forward to being able to launch those at a reasonably early time.”
Tensions have heightened on the Korean peninsula after North Korea’s Nov. 23 bombing of a South Korean island that killed four people. Bosworth is traveling to Asia less than two months since his last trip to the region following North Korea’s revelation that it was enriching uranium for a nuclear plant.
North Korea last week called for dialogue to defuse tensions on the peninsula “as early as possible.” Lee said yesterday his country was open to talks with Kim Jong Il’s regime only if North Korea “exhibits sincerity.”
