Zimbabwe arrests Americans over AIDS drugs
Loading ...Four Americans are due to appear before a judge in Zimbabwe Monday after being charged with distributing AIDS drugs without a license, the U.S. Embassy said.
Zimbabwean authorities arrested the aid workers — one doctor, two nurses and a volunteer — affiliated with California-based Allen Temple AIDS ministry on Thursday, according to a statement issued by embassy officials. The group denies all charges, Sunday’s statement added.
Embassy spokeswoman Sharon Hudson-Dean told msnbc.com that they were expected to appear in court Monday afternoon. She said the embassy has been monitoring the situation “very carefully” and was “providing full consular services” to the aid workers.
Consular officers “immediately went to visit the group in custody and have stayed in close touch with the group” and its representatives since the detainment, the statement added. The consular staff reported that the group is “receiving adequate treatment.”
