5th Annual Restoration Rocks Concert
Art, live-music and good food filled the streets as people poured out from all over to celebrate the fifth Annual Restoration Rocks Concert.
The event was sponsored by Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, the nation’s 1st community development corporation started by Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob K. Javits in 1964 as part of the Special Impact Program, an amendment to the Economic Opportunity Act. The purpose of the corporation was to improve the quality of life in Central Brooklyn and this street fair kicked off Bed-Stuy Alive’s week-long festival to promote the culture, commerce and community of Bed-Stuy.

People from the community enjoyed live performances by the Brooklyn Philharmonic featuring Bed-Stuy’s own Mos Def, Idle Warship, Pharoah Monch and other local talents who have a tie to Bed-Stuy or Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Philharmonic is also collaborating with Mos Def as a series of community concerts to start off their new season which will end in a big concert at the Restoration Plaza in June 2012.
Food, food and more food from the community’s restaurants had people lining up to catch a taste of the Caribbean; from blended fruit smoothies from Flavors (6001 Strickland Ave., at V Ave.) to a delicious jerk chicken dinner from Six in the Kitchen, straight off the grill.
Local artists had their work on display as did independent fashion designers and merchants selling everything from scented body oils to natural shea butter and printed hand bags.
